Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has called for efforts to boost passion and courage in science and technology as the country seeks to translate S&T progress into social and economic development.
"Innovation is the primary impetus for development, and our 81 million science and technology workers are the backbone of innovation-driven development," Li said in a written instruction on the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) innovation campaign released on Tuesday.
"S&T workers should follow the country's strategic demands, seize opportunities for the development of a new economy, dare to take the lead and overcome hardships," Li said, urging them to translate S&T achievements into productivity and development.
Li urged the CAST to muster innovation groups and individuals and provide better services to S&T specialists.
Also on Tuesday, Liu Yunshan, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, praised the CAST during the association's national congress.
Liu called for innovation by scientists in different disciplines, with a focus on core technologies.
Liu also urged Party and government organs at all levels to strengthen and improve their guidance on the work of the CAST, take good care of S&T talent and increase policy support for S&T innovation.
