Chen Bing, a police officer in Chongqing, came into contact with 10,000 volts of electricity during a criminal investigation in 2010.

This accident permanently damaged Chen's health. Chen's right arm was amputated and his right leg has been nonfunctional ever since the. Immediately after the accident, doctors even believed that Chen would be entirely confined to his bed or rely on a wheelchair to get around for the rest of his life.

After a year of hard work, Chen learned to walk on his own again, and is able to use his left hand to brush his teeth, wash his face, eat, write and type.

Given Chen's situation, he is entitled to basic pay, allowances and an additional 2,500 yuan for nursing expenses each month. However, Chen refused to accept the nursing subsidy at the end of 2011, instead returning to work as a police officer after persistently entreating the public security bureau to give him his old job back.

Chen has sorted through 5,000 files on old cases and helped crack more than 30 cases within the four years since he went back to work. Meanwhile, he has assisted in training five new police officers.

"I want to function as a little orange lamp to brighten other people's lives and warm their hearts," Chen wrote in his diary. In 2014, Chen was awarded the First Class Order of Heroic Exemplar by the Chinese Ministry of Public Security.
