A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Thursday said that China is paying close attention to the referendum on whether Britain will remain in the European Union (EU) or leave.
The polls opened Thursday morning local time and the outcome is expected to be announced in the early hours of Friday.
"We respect the choice of the British people," spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a daily press briefing, adding that China consistently supports European integration and would like to see a united, strong and stable EU playing an important role in international affairs.
Hua said China attaches importance to ties with Britain and is willing to work together with Britain to continue the mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields.
