Police officers across China on Tuesday started an interactive training program on upgraded duty protocol, in a bid to prevent abuse of power.
The program mainly focused on duties involving close contact with the public, according to a press release from the Ministry of Public Security.
Officers were instructed to always carry their police ID while on duty and, when encountering obstruction, videotape the whole interaction.
When suspects, or those associated with them, resist law enforcement, officers were directed to use mild disengagement and restraint maneuvers instead of physical assault.
The new protocols are more detailed and practical than previous versions and were informed by recent successful practice, the ministry said.
The ministry also plans to roll out a supervision mechanism to ensure police officers follow the new protocols, the statement said.
