The People's Court of Pudong New Area recently announced their judgment on the city's first-ever court case involving a WeChat business deal.
Last year, a man surnamed Ni, the legal representative of a Shanghai-based company, placed an order on WeChat with a business in Shenzhen to purchase 6,000 wine-bottle labels. Ni paid 31,000 yuan ($4,648) upfront and received his order, but refused to pay off the remaining difference.
As there was no paper contract signed or sealed during the transaction due to the order and wire transfer all being processed via WeChat's digital platforms, Ni thought he could get away with cheating the other vendor.
However, screenshots, e-receipts from the money transfer and shipping logistics papers were presented during the plaintiff's testimony. The defendant was ordered to pay 75,000 yuan.
