Several days ago, the uniform for Chinese athletes at the opening ceremony of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics provoked an animated discussion on the internet.
The uniform, known to many Chinese netizens as the "fried eggs with tomato", was the center of attention at the opening ceremony of Olympics.
The uniform has a male version and a female version. The male version includes a red coat, a white shirt, a patterned tie, white trousers and white shoes. The female one includes a yellow coat, a patterned silk scarf, and a white shirt and skirt together with white shoes.
Some people think this outfit is a terrible match for Chinese athletes, while others think the uniform holds a symbol of good fortune and success.
A dressing stylist in Beijing said that the uniform looked ungraceful because of its conservative style and oversaturated colors. The same stylist said the youth and vigor of Chinese young athletes cannot be well demonstrated to all the people across the globe. Renowned Chinese TV host Bai Yansong said "I like the dressing style of Chinese athletes, rendering the Chinese people a sense of belonging and kindness. As a rule, the first dish most Chinese can do well is frying eggs with tomatoes."
Faced with abusiveness and criticism, Ye Chaoying, the designer of the uniform, said: "It is our tradition to wear red clothes for celebrations. The purpose of wearing such uniform is to make our athletes feel like they are wearing our national flag when they step into the stadium."
"The design and product of the Olympic uniform has a strict procedure. The final design cannot be decided by me but a whole team. However, I will try to get associated with more athletes in the future by seeking their advice," Ye added.
In the sporting field, the fried-egg-with-tomato dressing style may be controversial. However, with two bright colors matching each other, the style engulfed fashion circles for some time. Why not take a look at this celebrity dressing show?
