According to Shanghai Pudong New Area People's Procuratorate, an employee surnamed Bai from a technological company providing third-party ticketing services for Shanghai Disneyland allegedly stole over 2,600 digital tickets, then resold 1,700 of them, netting 490,000 yuan ($73,471) in profits and causing 870,000 yuan in lost revenue to Disney.
The embezzlement was first brought to light back in July, when a tourist was told that his prepaid digital ticket had already been used. After an investigation, police arrested Bai and those scalpers whom Bai had sold these tickets to.
It was found that Bai had hacked into his company's ticking system, changed the date of pre-ordered digital tickets, then e-mailed the QR codes to scalpers for a low fee of 280 yuan, who in turn sold "discounted" tickets to unsuspecting tourists before the true owners of the prepaid tickets showed up.
