A company based in Sansha will soon operate another sea water desalting facility in China's islands in the South China Sea to provide fresh water to their residents and animals, and for landscape engineering.
Beijing Enterprises Water Group Limited, which launched in March its first sea water desalination facility capable of providing 500 tons of fresh water per day, will soon install a new one to treat up to 1, 000 tons daily in Yongxing Island, the Hainan Daily reported on Tuesday.
Sansha, located on Yongxing's Xisha Island, was officially established in 2012 to administer the Xisha, Zhongsha and Nansha island group and surrounding waters in the South China Sea, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
Before China established the southernmost city, residents and troops rationed the use of fresh water due to inadequate supply.
The water they used were tap and bottled water shipped to the island, locally-purified rain and underground water, said the Hainan Daily.
Water supply was also threatened by the poor quality of underground water and storms which limited the shipment of fresh water.
Research shows fear of damaging the coral reef limited the amount of underground water in Yongxing that could be extracted.
Aside from desalination, Sansha also sent a sewage disposal system to recycle water for irrigation and construction projects to save on fresh water.
