The 2016-2017 Shanghai British Math Teachers' Exchange, a key program in education initiatives undertaken by China and the UK, kicked off Monday at Shanghai Normal University, the Xinmin Evening News reported. Over 70 British primary school math teachers attended the event.
Sponsored by the British government, both countries sent math teachers to teach in the other country's schools in 2014 and 2015, in the hopes of boosting British's performance in math.
The program is regarded as the most innovative program of the UK's Department of Education and may lead to a fundamental change in the country's math teaching formula and a rise in students' math literacy, according to a third party evaluation released by Sheffield Hallam University.
From Monday through November 18, British teachers will attend classed at 43 primary school located in nine districts of Shanghai.
This month Shanghai will also send 71 Chinese math teachers to 35 primary school across the UK for a two-week-long educational collaboration.
