Sohu TV's new streaming drama Foxes in the Screen has become the platform's newest hit after its debut on Monday.
According to the statistics from Sohu TV, the first six episodes of the series have received more than 10 million views per episode.
The period drama features a female painter who sells antique furniture screens in the capital. Misfortune comes when she comes down with a strange disease and her fiancé has an affair with her best friend.
Looking to distract herself on the night her former fiancé and best friend are to be married, she accidently uses a magic brush to release three fox spirits.
The three promise to help her achieve her dream of becoming a royal painter, but their "help" tends to be more trouble than its worth.
Fox spirits have a long history in Chinese mythology and have featured in many well-known classic literature works including Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio by Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) author Pu Songling.
As restrictions on overseas shows have tightened recently, Chinese streaming sites have shifted to self-made shows. Sohu TV has recently announced that it would be increasing the number of domestic shows on its platform.
