A feature-length documentary about the Palace Museum's restoration team, and the antiques they work with, is set for nationwide release next month.

"Masters in Forbidden City" premiered in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, on Monday. The film, scheduled for release on Dec. 16, was produced following the success of its namesake TV series.

The three-episode TV series first was first aired on TV in January, and was rated 9.4 out of 10 by users of douban.com, the Chinese film and music website.

Director of the Palace Museum Shan Jixiang said the TV series proved popular with viewers and has been linked to a surge in applications for jobs with the restoration team. This year the palace museum received 15,000 applications for 20 positions.

The museum's restoration workshop is nearing the end of a two-year reconstruction project, and will reopen to public on Dec. 26.
