Shanghai will cancel New Year celebration on the Bund for the second straight year after a stampede claimed 36 lives on December 31, 2014, where, approximately 300,000 people had gathered near Chenyi Square, according to the Shanghai Huangpu District's police office.

This year, additional police officers will patrol the Bund, Yuyuan Garden and other city landmark destinations over the New Year holiday to strengthen public safety.

Meanwhile, one of the city's iconic buildings, Dashijie (literally Big World), will start a trial operation on Wednesday and reopen in March. The once prime venue was built in 1917 and known for its entertainment.

Over the next three month members from local government offices, schools and institutions will be invited to visit the new Dashijie to help test its management and operations. Dashijie's management office will collect public opinions during the pilot operation.
