A former senior legislator of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province went on trial Thursday for allegedly taking bribes of over 3.3 million U.S. dollars, a local court said.

Gai Ruyin, former deputy head of the Standing Committee of Heilongjiang Provincial People's Congress, was tried at the First Intermediate People's Court of Tianjin.

Gai was accused of taking advantage of his various positions in Heilongjiang to offer assistance to others in construction projects, business operations and promotions from 2003 to 2015, according to the indictment.

In return, he accepted money and property amounting more than 23 million yuan (around 3.33 million U.S. dollars) personally or through some "affiliated persons," the court said.

Gai pleaded guilty to his crimes and expressed remorse during the trial.

More than 30 people, including journalists and members of the public, were present at the open trial.

The verdict has yet to be announced.
