China is making steady progress to improve toilet sanitation nationwide since the "toilet revolution" began in 2015, a tourism official said on Saturday.

A total of 50,916 toilets have been installed or upgraded so far, 89.33 percent of the official target the government announced for the three years through to 2017, according to Li Jinzao, head of the China National Tourism Administration.

China wants to add 33,000 restrooms and renovate 24,000 over the 2015-2017 period.

The ongoing project has seen sanitation conditions improve significantly, Li said.

Toilets in the countryside and at tourist sites have long had a nasty reputation. In rural areas, some toilets are just little more than ramshackle shelters surrounded by bunches of cornstalk and others just open pits next to pigsties.

And at tourist sites, complaints of insufficient toilets, unhygienic conditions, and lack of sanitation workers has angered visitors.

The current "toilet revolution" is establishing new standards for toilets.
