Mountains May Depart, the latest work from the transformative Chinese director Jia Zhangke, has been nominated in four categories at the 23rd annual Chlotrudis Awards for Independent Film.
The U.S.-based film group's nominating committee put Jia's movie up for Best Movie, Director and Editing, while Tao Zhao is in contention for the Best Actress award.
The film, which earned 32.22 million yuan (5 million U.S. dollars) at the Chinese box office, has been characterized as one of Jia's most emotional works. Divided into three timeframes, many cultural, social and political issues are addressed.
Other Asian movies also feature in the nominations, with Japan's Our Little Sister up for Best Film. The awards ceremony, which celebrates independent film-making, will be held in March.
