Southwest China's Yunnan Province has reported a death from the H7N9 strain of bird flu.
The patient, an infant girl, died of the infection on Tuesday, the Health and Family Planning Commission of Yunnan Province said on Thursday.
According to the commission, the girl went to east China's Jiangxi Province with her parents on Jan. 21 for the Spring Festival holiday, and had contact with live poultry there. She developed symptoms on Jan. 29 and was hospitalized three days later. The patient returned to Yunnan on Feb. 5 and died at the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University.
All five family members who had close contact with the girl tested negative for the virus.
H7N9 was first reported to have infected humans in China in March 2013. Infections are most likely to strike in winter and spring.
