China's judoka Cheng Xunzhao won gold in the men's 90-kg category at the Paris Grand Slam on Sunday, for the country's first grand slam gold in men's judo.

Cheng also made history in Rio, taking home bronze for China's first Olympic medal in men's judo.

Cheng, who was unseeded and unheralded going into the Games, had a Qingdao Grand Prix gold medal from 2012 prior to Rio 2016.

The 26-year-old threw Tokyo Grand Slam silver medallist Axel Clerget of France for ippon with a golden score to take home gold.

In the semifinal, Cheng held down reigning world champion Gwak Donghan of South Korea with a kami-shiho-gatame for 20 seconds.

Gawk had to settle for a bronze along with Slovenia's Mihael Zgank, who lost to Clerget in the other semifinal by a waza-ari.
