Beijing police have decided not to punish a 17-year-old boy who on Saturday took away the phones of female marketers before throwing the phones and the saleswomen off a subway train.
Zhang was sentenced to five days of administrative detention, according to a notice issued via Beijing police's Sina Weibo on Monday, after getting into a scuffle with two women trying to drum up traffic to their online stores, who Zhang claimed continued to bother him after he refused to scan a QR code.
The notice also said the five days in detention will not take place since Zhang is a minor, still a student and a first-time offender.
According to the police notice, officers found that the two saleswomen, surnamed Pu and Hu, were not injured and their property was not damaged.
Zhang apologized to the pair, who were later warned by police officers about "over promoting" their products on the subway.
Police tracked down Zhang after a video clip of the incident went viral on Saturday.
The two-minute clip starts with Zhang asking one woman to "go away" while another woman calls the police. Zhang then snatches away their phones and tells the pair he will only return them after the women leave the train.
Throughout the video, Zhang swears at the women and abuses them for being "outsiders" in Beijing.
When the train stops at the station, Zhang throws their phones onto the platform and physically pushes them out of the subway carriage.
Many commenters on the viral clip accused Zhang of regional discrimination, one saying that "you shouldn't be rude regardless of whether you are a local or not."
