Dai Haibo, former deputy secretary-general of the Shanghai municipal government, stood trial Thursday on charges of accepting bribes and concealing assets.

Prosecutors alleged that Dai took advantage of various official positions to seek benefits for others, accepting bribes worth about 9.9 million yuan (1.4 million U.S. dollars) from 1998 to 2015, the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court heard.

Dai opened bank, stock and fund accounts with Citibank Hong Kong in April 2001 without reporting his assets to superior authorities, as required.

As of March 2015, the properties on the above accounts totaled more than 1.58 million yuan, prosecutors said.

Dai pled guilty and expressed remorse in the court. The verdict will be announced on a later date.
