Yang Luyu, former mayor of Jinan City in east China's Shandong Province, stood trial Thursday on charges of taking bribes.

The people's procuratorate of Pingdingshan City in central China's Henan Province alleged that Yang took advantage of his posts in the province between 2004 and 2016 to assist entities and individuals in company projects, real estate development, land-related procedures and adjustment of positions.

Prosecutors said Yang accepted bribes worth about 23.3 million yuan (about 3.4 million U.S. dollars) directly or through relatives.

Yang made a statement to the court in which he pled guilty and expressed remorse.

The court has adjourned to decide on sentencing.

The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) announced in April last year that Yang was under investigation for serious violations of discipline. He was deputy secretary of the CPC Jinan Municipal Committee at that time.
