Overtaking Twitter‍

Weibo's innovations have not only brought its users more convenient service, but also contributed to the company's performance in the capital market.

Weibo's market capitalization on the NASDAQ surpassed Twitter's on the New York Stock Exchange for a short while on October 17.

It fell behind again after Donald Trump, a known fan and frequent user of Twitter, won the U.S. presidential election. But that didn't last long. On February 13, Weibo again overtook its U.S.-based rival, an event widely reported by financial media.

The two platforms have about the same number of users: Sina said its service had 313 million monthly active users at the end of 2016, while Twitter had 319 million, according to data published by German-based statistics company Statista.

Weibo has often been called the Chinese Twitter. And with a similar user base and similar innovations, an Internet newcomer may find it hard to tell which service is actually performing better.

Still, maybe it is time for Twitter to lift its character limit, and accept an article like the one you've been reading, which we can easily post on Weibo.
