A photo depicting a topless patrolman asleep on a stairway after saving an elderly woman from drowning has gone viral online, with hundreds of shares and thousands of comments on Chinese social media platforms.

The photo captured Zhou Weipeng, a policeman from Guanghan, southwest China's Sichuan Province, pushed to the point of exhaustion in his dormitory building on April 16, 2017, Huaxi Metropolis Daily reported.

That afternoon Zhou picked up a call from his command center, requesting him to save a 60-year-old woman who had jumped from a bridge close to his patrol area.

After arriving at the scene, Zhou jumped into the river with his clothes on.

"The deep water and rapid flow pushed the old woman downstream. I swam quickly to catch her. But she was not in a good condition. I saw blood spread to the corner of her mouth and she seemed unconscious. It was really exhausting after swimming for 200 meters," Zhou told Huaxi.

Many netizens expressed their support for Zhou and wanted to get in touch with him, after his story was widely spread on Weibo. A female netizen from Chengdu read the story then told Huaxi: "If he doesn't have a girlfriend, I will try my best to be the one. If he has the one, I want to make friends with him."

"An ordinary man did an extraordinary thing," @weishenemya said.

"He is the coolest patrolman in Sichuan,"@wodeqianrenshijianren commented.
