Marco Fu edged 2010 winner Neil Robertson 13-11 in a thriller to reach the quarterfinals of the Snooker World Championship at Crucible on Monday.
Fu, competing for Hong Kong (China) will fight for a semifinal berth against title-holder and world number one Mark Selby, who spent only 41 minutes in the third session to defeat China's Xiao Guodong 13-6 in the afternoon.
The world number eight came from 10-8 and 11-10 down to win five of the last six frames, sealing victory on the final black of a dramatic 24th frame.
Fu, who lost to Selby 17-15 in last year's semifinal, said after the match: "It was very tough. I had so many chances and missed so many chances. It was one of those matches that neither of us deserved to win. For fighting spirit I was a 10 out of 10, but for snooker it was four out of 10."
Barry Hawkins, runner-up in 2013, secured his place in the last eight with a 13-6 victory over Scotland's Graeme Dott.
