China firmly opposed the European Union's (EU) irresponsible comments on Hong Kong's affairs in its report, a spokesperson for the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) said.
The European Commission and European External Action Service issued their 2016 reports on China's Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR Wednesday.
In response to media inquiry about the office's view on the issue, the spokesperson said on Thursday that "Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China. The European Union made irresponsible comments on Hong Kong's affairs, which are entirely China's domestic affair, in its report."
"We are gravely concerned about and firmly opposed to such move," said the spokesperson.
Over the past 20 years since Hong Kong's return to the motherland, the Chinese central government has acted in strict accordance with the constitution and the Basic Law and has been firmly committed to the pioneering cause of "one country, two systems," said the spokesperson.
The Chinese central government has given full support to the efforts of the SAR government to develop economy, improve people's livelihood, promote democracy and uphold social harmony, the spokesperson added.
Hong Kong has maintained its overall prosperity and stability, and remarkable success has been achieved in the implementation of the "one country, two systems" principle, said the spokesperson.
