A groom was detained on suspicion of fraud after he hired hundreds of people to stand in as relatives and guests at a wedding - because his parents didn't approve of the union.
Police took the groom, surnamed Wang, into custody at the banquet ceremony in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, on Sunday.
The bride, surnamed Liu, said she and her relatives became suspicious at the 600-guest affair after Wang's parents failed to show up.
"He just kept making phone calls and telling me that they were on their way," said Liu.
A quick survey of Wang's guests showed the majority were paid posers. Liu's family called police.
Wang later told police he hired the guests because his parents didn't approve of their wedding.
"We've been together for so many years, if they didn't approve why they didn't just say so," said Liu.
"I suspect [the people I met] weren't his parents either. They're all con artists," she added.
Wang is being held on fraud charges.
