A doctor in Hunan Province has been given a 1-year suspension for refusing to treat a child who fell from a window after mistakenly declaring him brain-dead at the scene.
Thanks to his family, 6-year-old Pengpeng is being treated for brain injuries after he was almost left for dead by the responding doctor and paramedics.
Pengpeng was on the ground unconscious Saturday after falling 8 meters from an apartment window in the city of Changning when the ambulance arrived with a doctor.
The doctor, who was not named, examined Pengpeng before declaring him brain-dead and refused him treatment or to take him to Changning People's Hospital.
"I begged her to give my grandson oxygen but she refused," Pengpeng's grandmother told media.
An argument broke out between paramedics and the boy's family, during which the boy's grandfather broke an ambulance window and punctured the tires.
Pengpeng's family brought the boy to Changning People's Hospital on their own, where doctors determined him not to be brain-dead but comatose.
The responding doctor is to be suspended for 1 year, Changning People's Hospital announced.
"She was erroneous in her judgment and doesn't have much experience," said the director of the hospital, surname Liu.
The dispatched paramedics are also facing punishment, the Changning Health and Family Planning Bureau said Thursday.
