Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has stressed the importance of quality and safety in China's first demonstration nuclear power project using Hualong One technology, a domestically-developed third-generation reactor design.
In written comments on the project's progress, Li congratulated designers and construction workers for the successful installation of the project's containment dome, calling it a move "of great significance."
A press release issued on Friday quoted Li's comments as saying that the project should be put into operation on schedule under the precondition of ensuring quality and safety.
"Absolute safety" must be guaranteed in nuclear power construction, operation and management, said the premier.
A 340-tonne hemispherical dome was installed Thursday on the No.5 unit of China National Nuclear Corporation's Fuqing nuclear power plant, the first reactor featuring the Hualong One design, in coastal city of Fuqing, Fujian Province.
The dome will provide protection against nuclear accidents, and both its design and installation were very challenging processes.
The installation marks the completion of the construction stage of the pilot project and the beginning of the assembly stage.
Premier Li called it a "landmark project" under the "Made in China 2025" plan, saying resources should be pooled for innovation and continuous improvements to the country's nuclear power research and production,
He also stressed the need for active participation in the global market to develop a world-class nuclear power brand and contribute to the upgrading of China's manufacturing sector.
Unveiled in May 2015, the "Made in China 2025" plan is aimed at transforming China from a manufacturing giant into a world manufacturing power by boosting innovation.
