A 70-year-old woman went to the hospital in Shanghai to get the nine rings on her seven fingers removed after she failed to dislodge them herself.
The woman, who was not named, had worn the ill-fitting rings for a long time causing her fingers to be swollen.
Doctors were quoted as saying that the swelling was serious, with the potential to kill tissue due to poor blood circulation, and the rings had to be removed immediately to prevent permanent damage to her fingers.
The hospital staff managed to shift two of the rings, but seven were still stuck. They called in firefighters for help.
It took the firefighters two hours to remove all the stuck rings with knives and hacksaws, leaving the last finger seriously injured.
The woman was quoted as saying that it was not the first time firefighters had removed rings from her swollen fingers.
