The well-reviewed film is the talk of the social media landscape topping comScore's "Most Talked About Movies" charts for the past three weeks. "Spider-Man: Homecoming" currently has a 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore.
Starring Tom Holland as the new Spider-Man,the film was directed by Jon Watts and costed 175 million U.S. dollars to produce.
"Despicable Me 3," the animated sequel from Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment, moved to the second place at the North American box office with an estimated 34 million U.S. dollars in its second weekend. The third installment in the "Despicable Me" franchise continues its great run with an estimated weekend box office of 139 million U.S. dollars in 60 territories, which raises the international total to 298.4 million U.S. dollars. Combined with the U.S. and Canada total of 149.2 million U.S. dollars, the worldwide total is 447.6 million U.S.dollars, according to studio figures collected by comScore.
Sony's "Baby Driver" was in third place. Edgar Wright's new film brought in an estimated 12.75 million U.S. dollars in weekend sales and 56.9 million U.S. dollars in total after just 12 days in North American theaters.
Warner Bros.' "Wonder Woman" landed in the fourth place with an estimated 10.1 million U.S. dollars in its sixth weekend, bringing its global total to 745.8 million U.S. dollars through Sunday. Paramount's "Transformers: The Last Knight" finished fifth with an estimated 6.3 million U.S. dollars in its third weekend.
