More than 35 percent of Shanghai white-collar workers were overweight in 2016, up from 15 percent in 2011, according to a report released by Shanghai Foreign Service, a business consulting company.

The report, based on the physical examination results of 500,000 white-collar workers, shows that 35.3 percent of these people were overweight, while 18.1 percent had fatty liver diseases, according to the report.

More than 53 percent of the overweight people were male.

Analysts said the weight problem was caused by poor eating habits and lifestyles.

In 2016, about 64 percent of these white-collar workers practiced health management, including getting regular exercise, eating a balanced diet and undergoing regular medical examinations, down from 77 percent in 2015, the report said.
