Man charged for Australian National University campus attack

Australian Capital Terroritory (ACT) police announced on Saturday that it has charged an 18-year-old man following an attack at the Australian National University (ANU) Friday which left four people injured.

Police have now charged the man with several counts of assault, including assault causing actual bodily harm and intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Report by the Australian Broadcast Company (ABC) named the man as Alex Ophel.

He appeared at the ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday morning, wearing a blue police jumpsuit.

The police claimed that shortly after 9 a.m. Friday morning, Ophel assaulted students and a lecturer with a baseball bat.

During the class, he stood from his seat with a baseball bat and approached the lecturer at the front of the class.

Other students in the class intervened and attempted to restrain him.

During the incident, Ophel assaulted four people, one male and three females, including the lecturer.

The court Saturday ordered he undergo a mental health assessment and no date was set for when Ophel will reappear in court.

All the four people injured in the accident are Chinese students of ANU. The injuries are not life threatening.
