China's Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) Chief Executive Chui Sai On on Tuesday congratulated the 26 newly-elected legislators.
Chui said in a statement that with the smooth progress of the sixth legislative election on Sunday, 14 candidates won the directly-elected seats and 12 won the indirectly-elected seats.
He noted that in line with the principles of "one country, two systems," "Macao people governing Macao," and a high degree of autonomy, the sixth legislative election was conducted in accordance with the Basic Law and the Law of Legislative Election of the Macao SAR.
The new Legislative Assembly will soon be formed and will fulfill its duties in accordance with law, he added.
In line with the Basic Law, the new legislature is composed of 33 seats - 14 directly-elected seats, 12 indirectly-elected seats, and seven others which will be appointed by the SAR chief executive.
The term of the sixth Legislative Assembly is four years, which will start in October 2017.
