The country's first drama drafted, directed and performed by cancer survivors has made its debut in Shanghai.

Aiyou, Bupa, which shares a similar pronunciation with Don't Be Afraid, Cancer Companions, depicts the story of how Peilian, an official of a cancer recovery club, helps a young lung cancer patient Anhong and a number of other survivors rediscover the value of life and pick up their courage through "drama therapy".

The therapy, which combines psychology, education and art, provides an outlet for the frustration and depression patients feel, and teaches them to live with the disease.

The cast includes laryngeal and breast cancer survivors.

Dai Rong, the playwright and director, said: "I hope this drama could motivate everyone and make them embrace their life."

Co-presented by Jiefang Daily and the Shanghai Cancer Recovery Club, the drama will be staged at the city's Magnolia Theater until Oct 20.
