Nearly 50 percent of young Chinese do not exercise regularly, according to a recent survey jointly conducted by the China Youth Daily and wenjuan.com.

About 44.5 percent of the 1,983 respondents said they exercise less than three times a week.

According to the survey of Chinese aged from 18 to 35, only 17.8 percent of the respondents said they exercise daily.

The survey found that more than 27 percent of respondents are suffering from "sub-par health," which while not classified as a disease, still requires treatment.

Respondents attributed their poor physical fitness to a lack of awareness, study and work stress as well as unhealthy diets and lifestyles.

Around 40 percent said they are not satisfied with their declining heart and lung function and failing eyesight.

Only 20 percent said they think they enjoy "good" health.

The majority of the respondents are urban residents, with over 33 percent from China's first-tier cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Less than 3 percent come from townships and villages.
