Traffic police in Pudong New Area are now using unmanned aerial vehicles (aka drones) to catch drivers behaving illegally on highways. The new technology has helped catch hundreds of traffic violations since July, eastday.com reported Wednesday.
On Wednesday morning, police used one such drone to spot drivers on highway G1501 using mobile phones or smoking. At 9 a.m., for example, a truck driver made a phone call, which was photographed by the unmanned aerial vehicle. The police will later mail a ticket to the driver.
Compared with traditional electric police on highways, drones boast a number of advantages, such as clearer image resolution of license plate numbers and drivers' faces. Pudong police plan to expand drone use in the future.
