Chinese cheer for Trump, Rogers kin's Putonghua
Chinese netizens have said they felt a sense of national pride after they watched a member of U.S. President Donald Trump's family and investor Jim Rogers' family members speaking what they deemed "perfect Chinese."
A video of Rogers' daughters, Happy and Bee, showing off their Putonghua, or Mandarin with a Chinese tongue twister, went viral in China, with many people calling their use of Mandarin "nearly native" and "could work as a broadcaster in China."
Others said they felt prouder of their country and culture as "the legendary international investor" Rogers "voted for China by choosing Chinese for his daughters."
In an interview with Reuters back in 2014, Rogers said, "I am spending a lot of time, money and energy to be sure my kids do it [learn Mandarin]."
Rogers also made a life change by moving to Singapore to make sure his daughters were exposed to a Chinese-speaking environment.
During Trump's visit to China, his granddaughter Arabella's demonstration of her Chinese skills captured the public's attention.
Official Chinese media, including People's Daily, CCTV and the Xinhua News Agency, posted Arabella's video on their Weibo accounts, receiving more than 190,000 likes.
