Chinese universities have shown stronger performance and growing competitiveness in Asia, accounting for half of the top 10 universities, according to a university ranking list.
The 2018 Asia University Rankings list was released Wednesday by Times Higher Education (THE) at the 2018 Asia Universities Summit in Shenzhen in south China's Guangdong Province.
Among all the 350 universities on the list, five of the top 10 are from the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong. Tsinghua University is in second place, following the National University of Singapore. Peking University is in third place, followed by University of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
The number of Chinese universities entering the list continued to grow, from 87 last year to 101 in 2018, including 39 among the top 100.
The outstanding performance of Chinese universities in the ranking represents the successful outcome of China's increased input of capital and other resources into education over the past two decades, according to Phil Baty, editorial director of THE Global Rankings.
Founded in 1971, THE is one of the most acknowledged and influential world university ranking institutions, using a set of 13 performance indicators to judge research-intensive universities across all their core missions.
