A time of masks
"Under the current circumstances, things that have been over 'photoshopped' are not only about the pictures," said an online user, who agrees that such practices often conceal the truth about people.
The idea was echoed by 76.6 percent of the respondents. 82.7 percent thought that the country had entered into a time of "masks" where people pretend to be others in order to live better.
"It is common for people to pretend to be busy at work, to be friendly when meeting new people, or to be considerate to those who need help. But instead they turn out to be fakes and do nothing," said a student from Peking University. "People seem to live behind a mask which prevents others from knowing them," added another student.
About 54.4 percent said that they lack confidence, and pretended to be knowledgeable to get closer to success. Others pretended to be easy going in order to increase the number of contacts who may be "useful" in the future.
"Time reveals all," said Sun Qiuyun, director of the Chinese Association of Sociology. "Pretending will one day betray you, and if you do not build yourself up with real knowledge and improve yourself, others will one day learn your true side."
