Cards from China's largest bank card association, UnionPay, will be accepted by the majority of automated teller machines (ATMs) in Germany, a major step in increasing their global presence.
UnionPay International said on Tuesday that Deutsche Bank, Germany's largest bank, has agreed to accept UnionPay cards in its 6,500 ATMs, more than 60 percent of the country's total.
Ge Huayong, chairman of the parent company China UnionPay, said the company is improving its presence in Europe, with Germany a key market as a growing number of Chinese tourists travel there.
UnionPay users can currently swipe cards at around 80,000 commercial outlets across Germany, including duty-free shops, department stores and chain stores.
The cards have been accepted in 38 European countries and regions.
