China's State Council officially approved the establishment of the Fuzhou New Area on August 30.

The Fuzhou New Area joins Shanghai's Pudong and Tianjin's Binhai New Areas to become the 14th national comprehensive reform zone.

The area covers a planned space of 800 sq. km, including the whole of Mawei district, Cangshan district, Changle which is a county-level city, and parts of Fuqing, another county-level city.

The establishment of the area aims to deepen cooperation and exchange between Taiwan and Fujian provinces, and to promote eco-civilization and eco-social development in Fujian.

The Fuzhou New Area is expected to become an area for deepening cross-strait exchange, a door for further opening up, and a base of modern industries in southeast China as well as a pilot zone for reform and innovation.
