Beijing plans to finish building two new sections of subway line by the end of this year, one of which will stretch to a popular tourist site in the northern suburbs.
The work will see a total of 37.2 km of line added, bringing the length of Beijing's entire subway network to 554 km, the Beijing Transportation Commission said on Thursday.
The addition includes a middle route to Line 14, which connects the northeast with southwest in an L-shape, and an extension to the northern Changping Line that will allow tourists to travel from downtown to the Ming Tombs in Changping District in 40 minutes.
Beijing's subway system carries approximately 10 million passengers daily on workdays. By 2020, its total length is expected to have surpassed 1,000 km.
