Construction has started on office buildings in Beijing's subsidiary administrative center in the southeastern Tongzhou district, the Beijing Evening News reported on Thursday, citing a local official.

Li Wei, secretary-general with the Beijing government, was quoted as saying that Beijing authorities have worked out an overall program for the design and development of the capital's subsidiary administrative center. The building of Beijing's subsidiary administrative center will be in line with international standards, he noted.

The offices in the center will be dotted with forest gardens, and the ratio of green space will be at least 45 percent, according to the report.

In late November, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Urban Planning announced a plan to move many of its administrative offices out of the city center to the Tongzhou district, about 40 minutes' drive from downtown Beijing.

The plan is expected to draw up to 400,000 urban residents to the suburban district from the city center, the Xinhua News Agency reported on November 30.
