China experienced a "craze" for online shopping in 2015, not only for domestic products but also imported goods, a report released Tuesday showed.
Overseas baby products and cosmetics were especially popular, the report by Tmall Global and CBNData said.
As of the end of 2015, Tmall Global, a website that specializes in helping overseas brands reach customers in the Chinese mainland, had introduced 5,400 brands from 53 countries and regions, the report said. More than 80 percent of those brands made their debut in China, media reports said.
Many of those brands received a hearty welcome from Chinese online customers.
A report from news portal yicai.com Tuesday said that in the eyes of Chinese customers, Germany is synonymous with quality milk, France and Italy represent "fashion cities", while Japan is famed for producing diapers and cosmetics from South Korea are ranked as the best.
The Tmall report noted that Chinese customers like three types of overseas products the best: maternal and baby products, makeup, and health products.
According to the report, Chinese women tend to buy a lot of cosmetics and -skincare products online before they get married, but after marriage, baby and maternal products are their favorites.
The report indicated that half of the electronic toothbrushes bought by young mothers were purchased through Tmall Global.
Geographically speaking, apart from first-tier cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, where e-shopping has become the norm, residents from smaller cities and even regions that are normally considered less-developed like western regions in China, also lavished a lot of money on Internet shopping in the past year.
Female shoppers from Northwest -China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous -Region, for example, are heavily represented on Tmall, where they bought everything from skin cream and perfume to nuts and health products, the Tmall report showed.
