The Hurun Report released on Wednesday the Hurun Global Rich List 2016, saying that the number of Chinese billionaires has overtaken that of the U.S. for the first time.
China and the U.S. - with 568 and 535 billionaires, respectively - account for half of the Hurun list and the number of Chinese billionaires has risen 80 percent since 2013, according to a report that Hurun sent to the Global Times on Wednesday.
Beijing is the new "Billionaire Capital of the World," Hurun said, snatching the title from New York for the first time. Four other Chinese cities also made the top 10 for rich people: Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenzhen in South China's Guangdong Province and Hangzhou in East China's Zhejiang Province.
The Hurun Global Rich List 2016 ranked 2,188 billionaires from 68 countries and regions, up 99 from last year, in another record-breaking year for the world's billionaires, the report said.
Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft Corp, retained the No.1 spot with a fortune of $80 billion, followed by Warren Buffett with a fortune of $68 billion and Amancio Ortega with $64 billion, according to the report.
Wang Jianlin, chairman of the Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group, was the richest Chinese national with $26 billion, ranking 21st in the world, just ahead of Jack Ma Yun, executive chairman of domestic Internet giant Alibaba Group Holding, the report noted.
Ma was second with $21 billion among billionaires in the Chinese mainland, according to the report.
