Northeast China's Liaoning Province allegedly faked its GDP growth during a certain period, and the local government has been asked to resolve this problem, domestic news website cnr.cn reported on Sunday, citing a recent report from the country's top disciplinary body.
This is not the first time that Liaoning has been targeted for such figures. The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) of the Communist Party of China identified this issue in 2014, cnr.cn noted. Faking the numbers showed that local officials were eager to pursue a high position in the national GDP ranking, which could be easily interpreted as validation of their performance, cnr.cn said, citing a comment of Nandu Daily.
The province was the worst performer in GDP terms in the first half of 2016, with a contraction of 1 percent.
In the CCDI's report posted on its website on Thursday, the agency said the governance environment in Liaoning Province has deteriorated, and it needs to be "purified and further improved."
The situation is related to a lack of responsibility and spreading corruption, the report said.
Wang Min, former party chief of Liaoning Province, was expelled from the Party and dismissed from public office for serious breach of Party discipline, according to an announcement on the CCDI's website on August 10.
