Taiwan's exports totalled 24.7 billion U.S. dollars in August, up 1.0 percent from the same month last year, marking the second month of growth since the island ended 17 consecutive months of contraction, the island's finance authority said in a report on Wednesday.

The reading also meant growth of 2.2 percent from the preceding month, according to the report, which added the expansion was mainly attributed to the increased shipments of the components of electronic products amid high demand in semiconductor.

The report said the total exports in the first eight months of the year amounted to 180 billion U.S. dollars, down 6.6 percent from the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the island's imports in the recording month decreased 0.8 percent from a year earlier to 20.7 billion U.S. dollars, resulting a trade surplus of 3.99 billion U.S. dollars for the month, the report added.
