North China's Shanxi Province, a major coal producer in the nation, said it has achieved success in cutting overcapacity in the coal, iron and steel and electricity sectors, the Shanxi Daily newspaper reported Monday.
In the first half of this year, the province cut coal production by 68.81 million tons, down 14.9 percent from the same period last year. The rate of capacity reduction was 5.2 percentage points higher than the national average, according to the newspaper.
Coal companies now stick tightly to an arrangement under which they only produce on 276 days per year. The provincial authorities have also ordered production to be halted at 16 coal mines lacking the required paperwork. They also halted production at 207 mines under State-owned coal companies to ensure the capacity reduction target of 20 million tons for this year is realized.
The province will also reduce iron and steel production by 820,000 tons within the year.
