Bitcoin's latest stock surge is being overshadowed by yet another hacking investigation. Bithumb, one of the largest Bitcoin exchanges in the world was hacked on Wednesday.

The South Korea-based exchange said that it believes personal details of more than 30,000 of its customers were stolen as a result of the breach.

Bithumb is the fourth largest exchange globally in terms of all cyptocurriencies traded daily. By Wednesday it had jumped to number one.

In a statement, Bithumb said that an employee's computer was compromised, not the company's server.

"The employee PC, not the head office server, was hacked. Personal information such as mobile phone and email address of some users were leaked. However, some customers were found to have been stolen from because of the disposable password used in electronic financial transactions."
