Apple Inc, the United States tech giant, has decided to open its first Chinese data center in the southwestern province of Guizhou, the company announced Wednesday.

With a contracted investment of one billion U.S. dollars, the data center, to be located in Guian New Area, plans to offer iCloud services on the Chinese mainland, the company said at a press conference.

The new center will run entirely on renewable energy and will become a pilot green data center project in southern China, according to Guian New Area's official website.

Lisa Jackson, Apple's vice president of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives, said Guizhou's efforts in sustainable development had been impressive and the province was one of the most promising places in China to set up date centers.
