Guizhou-Cloud Big Data Industry Co (GCBD), the new operator of Apple's iCloud service in China, has recently signed a deal with China Telecom for cloud storage service, which is a smart move for the U.S. company, an industry expert said.
China Telecom will be the first cloud storage service provider for Apple in the Chinese mainland, with the use of its object-oriented storage (OOS) system, GCBD said in a statement sent to the Global Times on Tuesday.
OOS is designed to provide a simple web services interface that can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web, according to the company's website.
The technology has already been commercialized in more than 20 Chinese cities, and it will meet the storage demand of iCloud users nationwide.
However, the U.S. government has been moving to block Chinese telecoms companies for national security reasons. "No telecom operator will manage and monitor user data, and Apple needs Chinese local operators to provide network services," Xiang Ligang, an industry expert, told the Global Times.
"It's a smart choice for Apple's cloud service provider in mainland to have a partnership with China Telecom, considering its network performance and its sustainable internet data center services," Xiang said.
